The Hamtramck Police Department is launching its inaugural Citizens Police Academy, a comprehensive 21-hour course designed to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of the department’s personnel and policies. The program aims to strengthen the relationship between the police force and the community by engaging local leaders, including professionals, activists, and religious figures.
The academy will consist of weekly three-hour sessions, featuring coursework, tours, and hands-on demonstrations. Topics covered include evidence collection, digital forensics, and patrol procedures. The department also plans to offer tours and ride-alongs to enhance the learning experience. Classes are scheduled to take place on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., starting January 29 through March 19.
Hamtramck Police Chief Jamiel Altaheri emphasizes that the academy seeks to build bridges between the department and the public by fostering transparency and understanding. The initiative encourages participation from individuals across all communities in Hamtramck, aiming for a diverse group of attendees. Residents and those who work in Hamtramck are encouraged to apply. Applications can be submitted via email, at the front desk of the Police Department, or through the department’s Facebook page.
