The City of Dearborn has recently announced a free program to help homeowners rehabilitate, repair, or replace damaged porches and front steps. The program, which starts on September 30, 2024, is partially funded by federal grants and aims to improve the community’s porches, an essential aspect of community life, according to Mayor Abdullah Hammoud.
Starting on September 30, 2024, eligible homeowners can apply to the Front Porch & Step Rehabilitation Program through an online application on Dearborn’s official website. To be considered for this program, applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Owning and occupying a single-family home in Dearborn for at least one year (or five years without a Certificate of Occupancy)
- Being up-to-date on property taxes and bills
- Ensuring the property is free from hazardous materials like asbestos
The city’s Economic Development Department will inspect properties to assess damage and determine eligibility. Repairs will be prioritized based on severity and available funding. Although deck replacements are excluded, some side or back door steps may qualify. All wooden structures will be replaced with concrete.
Homeowners can submit their applications until the end of October 2024. Selected homeowners will be placed on a waiting list, and renovations will be carried out on a first-come, first-served basis. This program is free for qualifying homeowners, ensuring that everyone has an opportunity to enhance their home’s appearance and safety.
