The Hamtramck Public Schools (HPS) has approved more than $140,000 dollars for ad contracts with the Hamtramck Review and the Yemeni American News. Superintendent Nabil Nagi has recommended the approval of the contracts covering advertising for the year 2022-2023. This comes in a time when the HPS is struggling financially and had previously tried to increase taxes on Hamtramck residents to cover expenses.
Nasr Hussain, a Hamtramck residents and activist, considered this approval a waste of taxpayer funds that were supposed to be spent on Hamtramck students.. Tarek Almasmari, another Hamtramck resident, encouraged the board to get rid of the advertisement expense for both newspaper (Hamtramck Review & Yemeni American News).
